Comparison of SDM line and SDMR-2500 in terms of functional capabilities. Common features and difference. As one can notice, SDM machines and SDMR-2500 look similar and their functional capabilities have lots in common.
SDM line is presented by three models i.e. SDM-2000, SDM-2200 и SDM-2500. Their difference lies in motor power, planing width and size of work tables.
All SDM machines can be used for lengthwise and cross cutting, jointing, grooving by disc or end cutters. For milling purpose the standard shipping milling table or extra milling device are used.
Manual thicknessing is possible if a customer wishes to purchase the device for this purpose which has its own cutterblock and mounted on top of the machine.
The major difference BELMASH SDMR-2500 can boast of is the integrated automatic thickness planer. Underneath the cutterblock there is a movable table where a workpiece is place and which can be lifted up and down. The feeding of material is made automatically. Milling operations with the use of shaped and end cutters are not possible. Disc cutter which is mounted in cutterblock of the machine can be used.
Both SDM machines and SDMR-2500 are equipped with two cutterblocks: the one for planing (mounted to the frame) and the one for cutting (can be lifted up and down). When the machine is adjusted for cutting a user needs to lift up the respective cutterblock with the saw blade (or disc cutter). If planing is required, the cutterblock with saw blade or disc cutter has to be moved down to the point when the saw blade or the disc cutter are below the table level. The planer tables are moved apart and a little downwards releasing planer cutterblock. The feeding table next to the user is moved to the stop while the farther table can be adjusted. The switch of the machine is located on rotary bracket under the feeding table. Depending on work, a user can stand on both sides of the machine as the switch can be moved to either side. The height of the switch location is specially selected to make the emergency stop of the machine without use of a hand, for example, to stop the machine by a knee.
SDMR-2500 has cutterblock with three planer knives as compared to SDM’s two. At the same rotational speed, the cutterblock with 3 knives provides for better planing finish. The knife’s attachment is as follows: they are tightened by the adjusting screws directly into the cutterblock’s body.
The standard shipping set of SDM line does not include thicknessing joint. A user can additionally purchase the thicknessing device with manual feeding of material.
The device is mounted on top of the machine with its cutterblock powered from the machine’s motor.
In SDMR-2500 there is an integrated planer cutterblock with a workpiece to be placed on the thicknessing table and planed from the top of it.
The thicknessing table with the adjusting unit is shown on picture:
This unit is considered non-removable. The picture is taken before the machine’s assembly. To lift the table, it is required to twist the handle (not shown on this picture), then fix it by butterfly nut (see on picture). Take notice of free rotating rollers for workpiece moving. These rollers protrude by 0.3mm over the work table and are used to prevent excessive friction of workpieces. Automatic infeed unit is located in front of a workpiece, it can be observed when the planer tables are off.
This operation is made without use of tools. The picture shows not only the tables but also the housing covering the infeed unit.
It’s worth saying that SDM adjustments do not require to take off the tables that is why it tends to be quite a task as compared to SDMR-2500.
Let’s look closer at thicknesser unit. To start with, if the machine can be connected to sawdust extractor, it is required to take off the planer tables to mount the housing for dust collection.
Then, the hose of dust extractor should be connected with the branch pipe located on the housing. It is for this reason that the tables are made detachable otherwise the housing would have no place to be mounted. As a workpiece is processed under the planer table, it can be mounted on the top only. At jointing , though, the workpiece is placed above the cutterblock and the housing can be placed in the bracket (angle stopper). Obviously, it is the same very housing which is changed based on operation mode.
Thus, to thickness workpieces, a user just needs to adjust the required height of of thicknessing table and start working.
Adjust the thicknessing height, switch on the machine and start feeding workpieces to get the finished item on the outfeed side.
To add to it, the clamping force of the thicknesser is so big that a thick board over 3m in length can be planed by 1 person. To switch over to the jointing mode, the housing of the dust extractor has to be mounted on the thicknessing table and put together the jointing tables to set the required planing depth.
For cutting, it is required to set aside the jointer tables, adjust the saw blade height and mount the guide with support plank.
A workpiece rests on the plank, after the plank’s length is over, the blank goes a bit freely to ensure the saw blade is not stuck. In course of adjusting procedures, the screwdriver was used only once when the plank for lengthwise planing had to be tightened. Both the thicknessing and jointing produce a lot of saw dust, thus, a dust collector with the bag of at least ten liters will be required.
The basic shipping set of all Belmash machines includes universal guide and angular stopper to cut at an angle. All the major scales, graphic guides as well as on some machine parts are printed by resistant dye on steel plates with the use of industrial UV printer.
Besides, all information plates are fixed by screw but can be adjusted as the holes are oblong. SDM line and SDMR are also equipped with carriages to move along universal guide and angular stopper. These carriages are located on the universal guide and rotary bracket (angular stopper). The structural view is shown on picture.
The carriage has 2 plastic rollers which move on tubes. If the guide or stopper are not needed at the moment, the carriage can be firmly fixed by two screws. If the use of carriage is required, the screws are released. If the stopper is not needed, it needn’t be taken off, it is enough to flip it back below the table level.
If high precision is required, one needs to release the screw from the side and with the help of “flag” to get zero tolerance of carriage travel.
The machines can be completed with stands and tabletops. The structure of the machines allows to fix them directly to the stand by bolts and nuts or mount the tabletop on a stand and place the machine on it.
